Hello all prospective readers. This blog is intended to accompany a reading group I am looking to put together. As the title proposes, this is a reading group that will hopefully meet on Saturday mornings. Saturday mornings are the first bit of weekend and they are great. The sun seems to always be shining on Saturday mornings. So, what better time to get together with friends, acquaintances, or maybe perfect strangers to discuss art issues over morning coffee or tea.
Above you can find a PDF of the first reading I have picked to discuss, an article by David Hickey from January's issue of "Art in America." For the structure of this group, readings should be short, sweet, and provocative. Anyone can put forth a reading to the group and although I have "started" this group, there is not and should not be a leader. This is democratic, free-for-all, fun and learning.
This group is intended to be an outlet for discussion outside of the proscribed institutional discourse art students experience in school. This group should be a space for informal artistic discussion. Artists' reading groups are nothing new, but they are integral in the development of artistic community and the conception of new ideas.
Please reply to this post if you are interested in participating in the magic of the Saturday Morning Reading Group. Also, feel free to suggest things, criticize the ideas I have proposed, express enthusiasm, whatever. Once we get a working group of three or more people (three officially makes a group and not a pair right?) we will pin down a place and a time and get to reading.
xoxo,
Daryl
Lets read together!
